The Color of Pomegranates
Sergei Parajanov was a queer Armenian filmmaker & screenwriter. He invented his own style of filmmaking which differed from the socialist realism principles approved by the USSR, which combined with his behavior & lifestyle, led the USSR to imprison him & suppress his work. He started making films in 1954 but later disowned everything he made before 1965 as “garbage”. Widely hailed as his masterpiece as well as one of the greatest films ever made, The Color of Pomegranates is a biography about the Armenian ashug (singer-poet/bard) Sayat-Nova (King of Song) that attempts to portray the poet’s life visually & poetically rather than literally. This proposal will involve a screening of the film (preferably at Wondermoth or another venue able to screen a film), as well as short video essays about the film, short documentaries about Sayat Nova, & a brief discussion about the film, its symbols & poetry.
